Overview

R.D. Wing Co., Inc. is extremely proud to introduce you to Backlight Images™, an elegant 3-Dimensional photo reproduction and preservation system. The Backlight Images™ patented process provides a unique and eye catching method to design, display, advertise or permanently preserve 2-Dimensional photographic images and vectorized logos or designs in a 3-Dimensional format. Utilizing DuPont™ Corian®, the 3-D reliefs, when illuminated from behind, seem to come alive. There are 12 different colors of Corian® that can be used to create this completely mind blowing imaging process.

The Backlight Image™ process is more than just flat, square panels that have to be used in a vertical application. Product innovations have expanded to include options in thermoforming, adding color, creating unusual outside shapes, and backfilling for horizontal applications. The wonderful thing about Backlight Images™ is the ability for the designer, architect, or end user to completely customize their image to the exact specifications needed. Although traditionally utilizing a light box or natural sunlight, new advances in lighting technology can virtually eliminate the need for a light box, creating very thin profiles, while still illuminating the images with outstanding perfection.

A Brief History

In early 2000 when our highly evolved president, Rick Wing, woke up one morning, he decided he was going to set out and create 3-D reliefs, similar to Lincoln ’s bust on a penny, in large format. R.D. Wing Co., Inc. had been primarily an aerospace and transportation manufacturing company up until that point, but things were about to change. When deciding on a medium, both MDF and Corian® were considered viable possibilities. After deliberating on both materials and their respective properties, it was decided that Corian® was the best fit.

Production began and soon an image was created. A photo of the “The King”, Elvis Presley, was used as the first Backlight Image™. When completed, a number of employees gathered around the image to talk about it. In a word, awful; the image was not a bust and not fully a picture either. The textures were muted and had no characteristics like that of a penny. It wasn’t until one individual picked up the image inadvertently raising it in front of the office windows that a transforming moment took place. Elvis came alive in a full 8” x 10”.

With this new revelation at hand, R.D. Wing Co., Inc. began the arduous journey of refining our Backlight Images™ process. Unveiled to the public at the 2000 Global Shop tradeshow, it has taken seven long years to develop the perfection that we have today. Thousands of custom Backlight Images™ have been produced for both Commercial and Residential uses. Over the last 7 years we have perfected thermoforming our images, adding color, utilizing different light sources, and designing custom lightboxes. The future looks bright for Backlight Images™ as we are constantly trying innovative new methods to make Backlight Images™ even better.

Oh, and if you were wondering about “The King”, he sits in a glass case in our North American showroom to show off our meager first attempt.
